First the bad news

Alright, first off, I know that people don’t enjoy being generalized. But unfortunately for everyone under 21, you’re being placed in a negative light in the minds of insurance companies. Maybe you’re the safest person in the world, are very cautious and intelligent, and will never get in a crash for as long as you live. That does matter, but know that insurance companies don’t know that about you right off the bat. What they see is an adult who is in a high-risk age range that means they’ll have to be paying loads to pull your car off of a tree someday soon. But before you start groaning, be aware that there are things you can do. You can fight against the statistics and prove to the companies that you are responsible, and should be allowed to pay less for car insurance.

Searching for Insurance

No matter the age, you should always search for your car insurance and compare quotes online. But for those under 21, this is an absolute must. Shopping for quotes will help you weed out the companies that put unnecessarily heavy fines on people your age. It’s quicker and easier to shop online, and you’ll have the pleasure of knowing that your money is not going into the hands of a money-hungry company.

Even if you find the best company for your age group, however, you’ll still have to pay more than people older than you. Unfortunately, this is a very safe move for insurance companies. Drivers that are under the age of 21 statistically are more reckless, less responsible, more of a liability, and much more likely to get into collisions. But don’t worry- I’ve compiled a list of tips to keep your insurance costs as low as possible.

Tips for Success

First of all, and this cannot be stressed enough: STAY SAFE! Keep your driving record spotless. No matter what measures you take outside of this important lesson, this is what will ultimately tell the auto insurance companies whether or not they can trust you. Yes, this one may be a bit more difficult as that means you have to be much more aware of other drivers as well as yourself (and let us hope that you don’t meet a drunk driver on the road!) but this is important. Taking necessary precautions and keeping safe on the road is the only way to save money. It doesn’t matter whose fault it was- if you get in an accident, you’re costing the auto insurance company money!

Taking a defensive driving course also helps. They’re there to keep you safe, and the great bonus is that auto insurance companies will be convinced that you’re a responsible person. Some people are court-ordered to take safe driving courses, but if you take a class on your own, without court interference, you’re telling auto insurance companies that you’re responsible and want to be as cautious as possible on the road. Trust me, the class will help in the long run.

Keeping your grades up also helps keep your auto insurance costs down if you’re under 21. You can give your insurance agent your high school or college transcript as proof that you’re a responsible student. Insurance companies that see this will have the impression that you’re responsible driver, which will result in discounts.
