Introduction

If you’re taking out an auto insurance policy, you have to specifically state which cars you’re going to insure. Sometimes the companies are way too vague or technical in their speech. This means that while you’re deciding whether this or that car needs to be insured, the company is making your head spin with confusing phrases! This is a common practice, and it is why you frequently hear such policies called something like “legal mumbo jumbo”. Because it is! They expect everyone to know what they mean with absolutely no hassle, but life doesn’t work that way. Not everyone has the same extensive English background, and even if they do it can be difficult to decipher the point the companies are trying to get across!

Thankfully, this won’t be as much of a problem for you. Reading this article will help you understand a few basic phrases that stop up and frustrate many insurance buyers. With this you can decipher with the best of them, and know that you aren’t getting tricked. I will explain every confusing statement and put them in words that everyone can see and understand. Remember, you have to be sure about your car’s history. If it has any risk factors, you’re going to pay for it through your insurance companies. The following are some disclaimers regarding your car that you might find on your insurance policy.

The Disclaimers

The disclaimer says:

Each of the vehicles identified in this auto quote are driven at least7,500 miles annually.

 It really means:

Every car that you want to insure is driven at least 7,500 miles per year. If the car is driven for fewer miles each year, your auto insurance may be more affordable.

The disclaimer says:

Deductables and coverages selected apply to each vehicle.

It really means:

Every vehicle on your policy will have the same coverage and deductibles. If you decide to get collision coverage, every car in your policy will have it. This also means that every car is going to have to have all of the same coverages. Unless of course you want to get a different quote, but that is much more time consuming than covering all of them with the same stuff.

The disclaimer says:

Any coverage that displays a $0 premium for a vehicle does not apply for that vehicle.

It really means:

If you selected a specific type of coverage such as collision and it is showing up as $0 in amount, you can’t get the coverage for that car.

The disclaimer says:

Your vehicle has safety features, which qualifies you for discounts

It really means:

We are going to assume that your car has air bags, anti-lock brakes, anti-theft device and other such safety features. If this is true, you will be given a discount.

Final Thoughts

These are just a few quotes taken straight from insurance policies. While they aren’t the entire bulk of what you’ll be reading, they prepare you for what you are going to read. Even if you encounter a phrase that confuses you and isn’t explained in this article, be sure to speak with your insurance agent! It is their duty to make sure that you are completely knowledgeable about the coverage that you are going to be receiving. After all, why did they put such heavily-worded papers in front of you if they did not expect you to read them all? This key element makes sure that you aren’t duped by the fine print. Good luck on your search for affordable auto insurance, and good luck deciphering all of the legal documents!
